The Research Institute for fertilizers and insectofungicides (NIUIF), previously called as Scientific Institute for fertilizers (NIU), was founded on September, 12 1919 to solve a large, complex problem – create a powerful source of phosphate raw materials and the industry of mineral fertilizers.
The outstanding scientists have been invited to head the Institute. Professor Ya.V. Samoilov became the director of the Institute and the head of mining and geological department. Academician E.V.Britske became the head of technological department and agrochemical department was headed by academician D.N.Pryanishnikov.
Combining scientific activities together with teaching at higher educational institutions, they have gathered an advanced, creative youth who became the backbone of the young Institute. Subsequently, many specialists from NIU have become the leading scientist of chemical, geological, agrochemical science and engineering technology: academicians S.I.Volfkovich, A.N.Nesmeyanov, A.L.Yanshin, A.V.Peive, academician M.V.Katalymov from All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences named after V.Lenin, corresponding members of the USSR Academy of sciences A.V. Sokolov, A.P.Bezrukov, professors A.P.Belopolsky, M.L.Chepelevetsky, D.A.Sabinin, K.M.Malin, A.G.Amelin, L.E.Berlin, N.N.Melnikov, N.N.Postnikov, V.F. Turchin, A.V.Kazakov, F.T.Periturin, A.N.Lebedyantsev, V.V.Gemerling and others.
The complex principal was assumed as the base of research activities of the Institute – the field of research covered the entire issues related to production and application of mineral fertilizers, i.e. execution of mineral prospecting, the search for methods of raw materials beneficiation, development of technologies for processing of raw materials into fertilizers and agrochemical methods of their testing, research of fertilizers efficiency in agriculture.
The initial activities of the Institute were focused on the prospecting of raw materials, their beneficiation and processing.
In 1922 NIU set up an agrochemical experimental station at Dolgoprudny. In 1927 the first installation to produce ammonia synthesis in the country was constructed and commissioned at chemical enterprise in Chernorechensk, then installations of nitric acid, ammonium nitrate and calcium cyanamide went on stream.
In 1929 pilot facilities of NIU were set up and they became part of beneficiation, phosphate and thermal shops. At industrial –pilot facilities the technological processes investigated in the Institute were tried out. For the first time in the Soviet Union the there was organized the production of wet process phosphoric acid, thermal phosphoric acid, MAP, DAP, boric acid and other products. At present the pilot facilities of NIU has been transformed into JSC “REATEX”.
In 1931 the State Institute of Nitrogen Industry (GIAP) was organized and the employees from NIU laboratory of nitrogen fertilizers were transferred to work there. The same year in the system of People’s Commissariat on Agriculture the All-Union Research Institute for fertilizers and agropedology was set up.
In autumn of 1933 by the decision of heavy industry commissar G.K.Ordzhonikidze the young Institute of Insectofungicides (NIIF) merged with NIU. Integrated Institute (NIUIF) has started to deal with not only with fertilizers but with the production of chemicals against plant pests.
In 1933 a new division of sulphuric acid and sulphur was organized at the Institute. In 1943 a mining and chemical division separated from the Institute and it became the State Institute of mining and chemical raw materials. In 1963 the All–Union Research Institute of Plant Protection Chemicals was created.
In 1986 NIUIF was awarded with the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.
Since 1994 the Institute is Open Joint Stock Company (NIUIF).
Since the foundation of the Institute more than 80 plants for production of sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, mineral fertilizers and technical salts have been constructed and commissioned on the basis of its developments.
